Hot Cocoa Sensory Play

When my kids were little, sensory bins were everything. Now that I have grandkids, I love putting together simple setups like this hot cocoa sensory play — it’s cozy, fun, and smells so good. ☕🍫

This version uses cocoa moon sand, which is soft, moldable, and safe for little hands (even the curious ones who might try a taste). Add in a few scoops, spoons, and mini marshmallows, and you’ve got an afternoon of mess-friendly playtime.

⭐What You Will Need

  • 8 cups flour
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup oil (vegetable or canola works)
  • A handful of mini marshmallows
  • Sensory bin or large container
  • Spoons, scoops, and small bowls for playing
  • Optional: a tablecloth to help with cleanup!

⭐Instructions

  1. Start by adding the flour to a big mixing bowl or directly into your bin.

  2. Mix in the cocoa powder — add a little extra if you want a richer chocolate color.

  3. Slowly pour in the oil and mix with your hands until it reaches a soft, squishy texture. It should hold its shape when pressed together like sandcastle sand!

  4. Add your marshmallows and play tools, then invite your little one to dig in!

⭐Joy's Tip:

If your toddler is a taste-tester (we’ve all been there), just bake the flour for 5 minutes at 350°F to make it taste-safe. It’s not meant to be eaten, but this helps keep things safe if a nibble happens. 🍴😉

This makes such a sweet winter activity or indoor play idea on a chilly afternoon. Bonus: it smells just like a warm mug of cocoa!
